Reconstruction Era

Life in the south

Picture
Plantation owners sometime got their fields burned but most of them after the war had enough money to sharecrop.  Former slaves came to work on their fields for a share of the crops and housing but most former plantation owners cheated them and got rich again.
Newly freed slaves really didn't have much to do besides sharecropping on an owner's field.  They had no education and didn't know anything really to do besides farm.  When the Freedmen's Bureau came though the slaves got some education.  Eighty year olds and eight year olds were crowded into one room learning the same thing.  There were some who moved up north, but not much.  There wasn't much choice for former slaves.
